HB 186Passed the House; died in the Senate89th Regular Session (2025)

A near miss: Texas almost banned social media accounts for anyone under 18

What it does

HB 186 would have barred social media platforms from letting Texans under 18 create accounts and would have required age verification. Platforms would have had to delete a minor account within days of a parent request. The House passed it, but the Senate did not vote on it before the session ended, so it did not become law.

What it means for your community

Nothing changed for your family yet. The bill drew heavy attention and its authors have said they will file it again, so age checks on social apps are likely to come back up in the next session.
