Data centers and crypto sites face new rules for plugging into the Texas grid
What it does
SB 6 sets standards for how very large electric users, such as data centers and crypto mining operations, connect to the grid. It requires them to disclose backup generation, pay costs tied to their connection, and accept curtailment during emergencies. ERCOT gets new authority to order those large loads to cut usage when the grid is stressed.
What it means for your community
The rules are meant to keep the cost of new transmission lines off household bills and to protect homes during a grid emergency. Large new facilities near your city must show they can power down before they are allowed to power up.
